Important: Weekend Homework 26/9 - 27/9

Dear children,

Following the announcement of school closure, your teachers are unable to carry out the revision lessons we have planned for you. As such, for those in my group for English and Mathematics, please check your MC Online email by tonight.

Mathematics in Ms Tan's Group
Please complete all questions in Practice Paper 13 over the weekend.

Mathematics in Mrs Ong's Group
I will email you Homework Practice 6. Please print out and complete it. If you can't print it, please open up the document and do the questions on foolscap. This will give us more time to go through the problems next week.

English in Mrs Ong's Group
I will email you a composition on 'A Mystery'. It is a very interesting topic so do think through and plan your story curve before you write. Remember to apply the strategies of Internal Conflict or Character Growth taught whichever applicable. Please print out and complete it. If you can't print it, please open up the document, refer to the question and just do the composition on foolscap. I will pass you the composition question paper next week.

Please note that spelling will be postponed to next Tuesday.

Do take care of yourselves well during the haze period. Drink more water and avoid any outdoor activities. 'Mask up' if you have to go outdoors. You cannot see the particles you are breathing in but they will cause harm to your respiratory system and body.

Please get your parents to click here for the MOE press release with regards to school closure if they need more information.

Take care and I will see you soon!:)

Love,
Mrs Ong

Vocabulary and Ideas Associated with Train Breakdown

Dear children,

You can read the articles in the links given below and copy down the good phrases you can use in the composition if the topic is on a 'Train Breakdown'.

Look at how they describe the conditions inside the train during the breakdown. Avoid using the terms that are too technical, which describe the reasons behind the train breakdown, as you may not remember them. You can summarise that the train has broken down due to 'technical difficulties'.

Recommended Books for English Revision

Dear children,

As shared with your parents during Meet the Parents last Thursday and Friday, the following are 3 books I recommend for your revision. I personally find them helpful. You can purchase them for your revision if you wish, especially the Grammar Handbook for Primary 5 and 6.

For Comprehension Assessment Books, do exercise your own discretion when buying as the format you are sitting for at PSLE is the NEW format. Do browse through the books thoroughly before buying them.

Have a good break this holiday and spend time with your loved ones but do not forget that revision should be ongoing. You are reminded to exercise self-discipline and plan a daily schedule/timetable to ensure you set aside time for play and work every day:)

I look forward to see you on 22 June! Take care!

Love,
Mrs Ong

Good Luck!

Dear children,

All your main papers officially start tomorrow. It is time to show what you have learnt for the past 4 months! Please do not burn the midnight oil and do ensure you get sufficient rest and sleep. Drink enough water and take vitamin C to boost your immunity. :D I am certain you have put in effort to revise so just do your best from tomorrow!  Please do not give yourself unnecessary pressure as it is unhealthy.

Look through your files especially for questions you have made mistakes in and re-do them again. This time, make sure you get those questions right. The practice papers are especially important so do ensure you look through them.

All the best!

Mrs Ong

Paying Tribute to our Founding Father, late Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Dear children,

As we mourn the demise of Singapore's late founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, take a moment to reflect how we have become what we are today. He is more than just a man you learn from the textbook or hear from people. He has dedicated his whole life to building our nation. His wisdom, foresight, perseverance, willpower, tenacity and incredible commitment to his cause is unparalleled. We have a roof over our heads, food on our table, a world class transport system and education, law and order, a place filled with abundant opportunities and all these are attributed to his years of hard work. He built Singapore, a country with nothing and no natural resources from scratch, and change it from a third world country to a first world country in one generation. It was a mammoth task but an extraordinary Mr Lee accomplished the impossible.

Be thankful and contented with what you have, for being able to live in this tiny red dot known to all across the world as a prosperous, safe, clean, green and efficient metropolitan city. Know that you are blessed, and that Singapore owes it largely to a great leader and a hero to be where we are today.

I have created a wall for you to pen down your words of condolences. Do take time to think through, and leave words of sympathy that you have for his family as well as your last words to late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

You can click here to access the page. Just double click anywhere on the wall to write a tribute and do remember to write down your name. I have written mine.

You can click here to find out more about his contributions to Singapore. There are speeches and videos uploaded on the PAP website to pay tribute to him. You can also follow the live blog on http://www.straitstimes.com/ to get the latest news and read more about his history.

Know that the visionary and inspiring leader, late Mr Lee Kuan Yew has left behind a legacy which will live on for generations to come and the future of Singapore now lies in your hands.

Regards,
Mrs Ong

Research for Stellar Unit 3: Defending the Seas

Dear 6 Joy,

If you happen to see this post, do take some time off today to research on pirates out at sea.

Please also click here and here to read up on the Vikings on Wikipedia.  The Vikings were Germanic Norse seafarers, speaking the Old Norse language, who raided and traded from their Scandinavian homelands across wide areas of northern and central Europe, as well as European Russia, during the late 8th to late 11th centuries.

The text is rather lengthy so you can browse through for the main ideas to get a gist of what the Vikings are.

You can click here for a shorter summary of the Vikings on BBC Primary History. The information is more child friendly.

Have fun exploring and do research more on your own!:)

How Punctuation Can Change Meaning

Dear children,

Here are more light-hearted examples of how punctuation can change meaning! Have fun reading them:)

Example 1:
Here’s how the magazine printed the headline:

She cooks her family and her dog (yes, the dog looks worried!) I think they meant “…finds inspiration in cooking, her family, and her dog.”

Example 2:

“Most of the time, travellers worry about their luggage.”

Now delete the comma after the fourth word to totally change the meaning of this sentence:

“Most of the time travellers worry about their luggage”

Mrs Ong

Important Information for Parents

Dear parents,

Thank you for taking time off to attend today's Meet the Parent session. I hope you find the talk conducted by the school leaders informative and the sessions with the teachers in the classroom helpful.

I have received queries with regards to the Direct School Admission Secondary Exercise. I have researched and found important information listed on the MOE websites. However, please note that the information is based on 2014 (for admission to Secondary One in 2015) and the latest information for 2015 is not available yet.

Please feel free to check the MOE websites I will be sharing shortly for updates from time to time. It is important to note that the application deadline for each DSA-Sec School may be different. So, it is always good to check the websites of the school your child is interested in for updates. The individual schools may also share the application criterion on their websites as well as the audition, interview and supporting documents required for the application. You can click here for an example.

For information on DSA-Sec Exercise, please click here.

For list of participating DSA Secondary Schools and their niche areas, please click here.

For the flowchart of stages of the DSA registration exercise, please click here.

When you visit the above webpages, you can also find other relevant links related to DSA such as Frequently Asked Questions and the DSA-Sec Internet System.

I hope you find the above information helpful to you and your child and I will be happy to answer any queries should you have them.

Warmest Regards,
Mrs Vanessa Ong
